Ostrich Mentality?

Whilst the numbers of people who shop over the Internet is increasing, and will continue to do so, it remains the case that many people prefer to buy things from a local retailer wherever possible. This might be for a number of reasons, such as helping local businesses; being able to call in to discuss requirements; complain, etc.

But most shoppers won't pay a premium for shopping locally - why should they?

However, I have regularly hear of cases (2 this week - hence this message) where shopkeepers doggedly refuse to sell items that carry a good margin at a price which matches the cost, including delivery, available over the Internet.

It's a simple choice: thanks to the Internet buyers now has greater information on which to negotiate and choose where to buy.

To shopkeepers, I say: even if you don't see the value in having a website yourself, don't bury your head in the sand because trade will simply pass you by. Recognise that the market has changed, build customer locality be flexible and continue to prosper. (Oh, and consider an e-commere website to win orders from areas where Ostriches exist!)
